There are a number of 3D modellers out there that can also animate your models. The most popular lowcost modeller that can do animation probably is Milkshape. Others are Blender, CharacterFX and JTEdit. Of course, the bigger professional apps like 3dstudio, Lightwave etc all can do animation as well but are usually way to expensive for the hobby gamedeveloper.

DeleD can't do animation and I'm not sure if it ever will support it. I want more lowpolygon editing, lighting, CSG and texturing methods in there first and that's quite enough for me, given the limited amount of time I have. Wink

Blender can't do (bone-) animation either, afaik only it's intern animations.
I am using Milkshape, but if you are looking for a free animation tool, take a look at Anim8tor.

Blender uses bones animation! I use Blender for character animation and export the result to my engine with a custom python script. Works fine, but writing the script was difficult as there are plenty pitfalls. Anyway, DirectX (X-file) exporting does also work for animations and is used widely. When you use Irrlicht or Ogre you're always fine with Blender!

Anim8or is nice, i used it for a long time. But its hard to get the animations into an engine, at least last time i checked. This may have changed with the scripting support. However, there seems to be no support and nobody i know of uses the animations in game development.

Another low-weight, no-cost animator is
Misfit Model 3D http://www.misfitcode.com/misfitmodel3d/.
If you like having the bare minimum!

Misfit Model 3D seems like a nice little package, thanks for the tip! However, it doesn't seem to export too many formats yet, hope that improves in the future.

The compile-your-own-plugins approach works well with programmers (especially given the cross-platform nature of the application), but I'm sure most artists will be at a loss there.
