Why is creating arches so difficult? I was trying to make a doorway with the torus method but I have no idea how to make the arch solid, on the front it looks fine but the back is hollow and open.
How do you add ready arches to existing walls?
And is it possible to make cylinders snap to the grid by default, just like cubes or pyramids? Confused

Just curious, why you are making a doorway arch, using a torus? If you could explain, perhaps there is a better way to create the same effect.

I used this method: http://www.delgine.com/software/deled/tutorials/showTutorial.php?tutorial=modelingArch&topic=1001

I tried to substract an ellipse/rectangle combination from a wall but the result was messy. Confused

You could acheive the same as here:
http://www.delgine.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4141

There is also a arched doorway I created here:

Feel free to use/adapt for your own use, and or, see how I produced it.

Making the arch is one thing, making a hole through a wall to accept it is another.
You could make a 'plug' and subtract that from the wall.... or.. depending on how much the arch extends into the wall, create a square openning and split the top edges to match the segments in your arch. Connect each set with its neighbour, so you dont get that nasty polygon across the openning. Now put in your arch, and align each set of vertices in the openning to match the coresponding vertice of the arch. If the arch is the same thickness as the wall, assuming you wanted the seperate faces for texturing, you can weld them to save vertcies but still keep the faces.

Using subtract can create a lot of vertices that will need cleaning up.
