I will start a simple tutorial soon, showing how I got caustics and flare along with the glass effects, all shown in this picture, which I'll start off with.

Whilst the graphics rendering engine of DeleD isn't up to the task of creating these effect natively, there is no reason, with a bit of help, you cannot get fairly good looking scenes/objects.

In the picture, and will form the tutorial, are the following effects:-
1) Glass transparencies
2) Glass distortion
3) Caustics/Specular effect
4) Lens Flare

Getting the balance right, between the 3 texture layers, which are all PNG 32bit with alpha channels, to prevent z fighting, was quite difficult, mainly because you can't make those adjustments easily in DeleD.

I had to continuously work between DeleD and Fireworks (my preferred graphics programme), adjusting the amount of alpha applied to each graphic (red wine, glass and the flare/caustic). Minor adjustments could then be made to the alpha values of each vertice layer. You have to lightmap each scene between adjustments.

Now I have the work-flow and basic settings, I'll pass them on in this tutorial Smile

Beginning this tutorial with the glass distortion effect.

It's no big secret, it is simply a distorted texture applied to a surface underneath the glass base.

Using Adobe Photoshop 7.0

Begin by loading the graphic you will use.

Now you have a couple of choices, either:-
1) Go straight to the Distort menu and apply the Pinch settings as shown below....

2) Or.... Prior to applying Pinch, you could apply the glass filter as shown:-

The settings for the Pinch, are shown below:-

Using a minus setting in Pinch, as opposed to the positive Spherize filter, Pinch works on around 60% of the graphic from the center, Spherize works on the whole graphic, meaning you cannot use the graphic easily for a coaster, which hangs outside the glass base. Smile
