This video demonstrates it better than I could try explaining:

See the indented runs in the side of the canyon rock? What is the best way to go about creating something similar in DeleD? I thought about Inset & Extrude but I was curious if anyone had any special techniques they could share.

Maybe if you use a mesh, you can select vertices's and use the magnet tool?

Start by selecting rows of vertices's and moving them into the rough profile of the canyon walls, then use the magnet tool on individual vertices's, setting different area values and even effects, to get the final look more natural.

I did something quite similar in my Tubes and Caves build, in the final cavern. However as I was going for a water effect, I played with the Smooth functions to get more shapes and effects. Careful though, it ups the poly count many fold.

You might try to use the grid as base object and then use magnet tool to shape it or just moving vertices by hand.

Im not sure is there a simple way to do it, so just start deled and try to create some sweet canyon's. Cool

Im actually getting inspiration to do some canyons myself thanks to the roadrunner clip. Laughing

Nice one dave. Smile

I had to go at it myself.

I actually UV mapped it with NatashaUV and made custom texture for it (realy fast doodle).
I will use NatashaUV more seen how easy it was to UV map this (Planar mapping FTW) even thought it's not perfect in anyway. Still fun 15min deled'ing. Cool

Edit: I edited the texture little bit more.

Rocks can be made several ways.

I usually use a sphere and just shape it.
For large structures like rock walls or caves, I would use the advice above. Grids work well. I made this in about 5 minutes using a grid. (and I'm not an artist)

I had to build it upside down and inside out as I couldn't get the polys to flip, but it still came out pretty good. (for me anyway)

I had a few minutes to spare, so created this offering Smile

As you can see in the inset picture, there are pathway polygons, to add your own textures. I would suggest using the 'UV Mapping Plugin' to add windy polygon textures.

You can download the DPS format version of the Canyon, which includes the textures I used, which are probably more of interest, than the simple model, made from a cube. Enjoy.

Nice work with texturing, AWM Mars.

Thanks Smile

I was lucky to have a desert mountain range texture of high quality for this example. I also added some colouring to groups of vertices's, to form the strata effects.

Using the Magnet tool, varying the type and degree of effect, makes this effortless.
