I have been stuggling with the basic ways to model, a new 3D modeler can get very confused on what method to use.

Lets say modeling a spider, would you want to build each leg, then attach to the body? or start with a body, subdivide and extrude?

Could someone create a tutorial on basic modeling techniques? I know folks use different styles but just sharing with some examples would really help.
