I produced a series of hanging posters for one of my projects, that look quite natural. They also help to soften the regimental lines and appearance of a block build (I sometimes turn off grid snap and allow for 'errors' of alignment, so they look natural).

I started with a grid with around 30 vertices per plane. You can adust these depending on the size of grid you want to start with.

Applying and aligning the texture of the hanging poster, gave me a guide for moving the vertices to give a rough natural edge. Once the edges were complete, I box mapped the texture again in the UV editor, and aligned/scaled it to suit the new shape.

Now I used Magnet, allowing it to capture between 2-6 vertices. I pushed and pulled areas of folds, indicated on the texture to mimic the lighing. Using smaller capture areas as I got to the thinner parts. I also used Magnet on the edges in some instances.

Once I was happy with the result, I optimised the grid to save vertices. To complete the task, I used a directional light, facing at 45 degrees along the poster and 60 degrees downwards, setting blur passes to 2, and smoothing curvature angle to 40, I light mapped the scene. This reinforced the shadowing on the texture. Lightmapping also smooths out the lines of the faces, giving a smooth and more natural appearance.

Adding cylinder poles top and bottom of the poster, along with string and a torus hanging ring, completed the task. I made a few to show variation.

That's neat! Thanks also for the explanation of the method you used. I'm sure people can benefit from it. Smile

Oh, forgot to add the file, so people can see more clearly the effects in DeleD.
