http://www.neoaxisgroup.com/

One platform I've been following with some interest is NeoAxis. It is still firmly in Beta, but most of the tools are there to create a basic game. Indeed their tank demo is awesome, and I don't play shoot em up games lol.

My previous reservations about how it handles Ogre meshes but not .material formats, but its own .highmaterial format, which you have to create inside the Resource Editor, unless you have Maya 3DMax, have been abated a little.
I recently installed Autodesk SoftImage PLE, which will export to Collada formats, NeoAxis can either read the mesh within the Collada file, or it can be converted directly within the Resource Editor to a mesh (right click the Dae file, choose Convert to Mesh). Of course Collada formats can be exported by many different programmes, many which are free. There still seems to be an issue with importing the materials/textures used with the Collada format, which no one seems to be bothered about lol.

The DeleD Collada exporter does fail to import into quite a few programmes, partly because it doesn't use the Collada file format of creating a model and material folders. I did get an error in one programme (Vast Park) which said it failed due to 'startindex', whatever that means Smile

The one thing I will say quite openly, do not expect a warm community like DeleD on their forums, unless you speak fluent binary. They tend to either ignore you, directly or indirectly, or treat you like you are a simpleton, if you cannot code. Maxwolf their moderator, seems to carry a large chip on his shoulder. That said, I continue to chip away.

They offer several levels of license. However in my opinion, I will not pay anything for software that is around 35% complete and still in beta. Once it's of commercial standard, complete with legible documentation, and works without major bugs and core failures, then I may part with my cash. In my experience, enthusiasm is not enough to drive a programme project through to that stage, and historically, many fall by the wayside. If I had a £ (Pound Sterling) for each time I've heard a programmer say, they have the next big thing to hit the gaming community, and will be millionaires within a year, I could retire. Laughing

Hi there AWM Mars

I have got the neoaxis engine. But i find its not very user friendly.I have dicided to go with the unity http://unity3d.com/unity/ engine & concentrate on this.
It is a big layout for the pro version $1500.00
but well worth the money,I am still playing with the free version at
the moment, and having great fun allready.

I have Unity3D, the free version and tried the Trial as well.. I find the interface real quirky, hard to fathom out how to place/load/import your own models/assets etc etc.
The terrain creator is 'okay' but still difficult to get perspective, and as I couldn't get the 'Play' function to work, hard to ascertain if you are getting the scales right.
I suspect its another platform that requires all of your free time to master the fundementals.

It seems to me, every developer think they know the best way to reinvent the wheel. Razz

The NeoAxis promotional video looks awesome. Seems they got their technology ready to go. Don't know anything about its user friendlyness of course, but from a technology point of view, it seems like a real contender.

Unity3D seems to have a nice world editor. At least, the user interface looks there's a lot of functionality. This can be a drawback too, actually, because it might be harder to find out where certain functions are hiding.

AWM: some developers do have the tendency to react... well... weird. To me it seems it's their way to feel good about themselves. As in: "I know more stuff than that other guy.". Don't let them get to you, they don't know better. Wink

If you interested in unity there are a lot of video tutorials out there and 3dbuzz site are gearing up to release a free major video training course to using.
With neoaxis I have looked at a long while ago, but have always been put off by the name. Seems a strange choice with the connotation.

Agreed, it gives the impression that it can do training, education etc as well as being a FPS. However in reality, until they give clearer tutorials and manuals about how.. I don't see it going beyond being a FPS by the vast majority of the community (most seem to be under 20 years old)

Hiding is one word, I could not see how to add even the basic items to the scene, let alone how to import my own models to place in the scene. Albeit I have yet to drag out the considerable manuals and tutorials, however some things should be intuitive, like drag and drop.

Guess its living in basements at their Mums (Moms) house, and eating pepperoni pizza for meals (2 week old is best, along with flat Pepsi). Basic human politeness is something they don't seem to be able to afford for sure. I got very good support by a couple of their community, but they are predominantly artists that suffered the same gauntlet of rudeness when they joined, otherwise I would not still be using the software.

@fik, I can understand perhaps paying for training/tutorials for software that was perhaps free, and or opensource, but not for software I am paying to use. The only exception to that maybe add-ons and or beyond the intermediate levels.

Yes, I managed a few so far. I have to say, it it not easy lol.

Go into Resource Editor, once you have exported your mesh as a Ogre .mesh format, and then create as many .highmaterials that you need for each sub-mesh, once saved into its own folder, within the data folder.

Go into Map Editor, click the 'Entity Types' tab, open 'Basic' folder, and click 'Static Mesh', this will open a explorer window so you can navigate to your model mesh (you did save it to the Data folder?).

Hope that helps.

And of course, you have seen the screenshots of the Mayan Temple complex at Tigre, from the NeoAxis forums http://www.neoaxisgroup.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=4839
